3. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

I do love some of Mark Twain's writing, but I'll be fixed if I can figure why this load of tripe is a masterpiece. I found it powerful boring and I feel bad forcing my 11th graders to read it. This is why they don't like to read.

Not recommended.

Are you being sarcastic? I've actually never read any of the Mark Twain classics, and I have always felt that it was a major omission. Now I'm thinking maybe not.

Not sarcastic at all. This was a terrible book. I hated every second of it. And I am not looking forward to getting in front of 110 kids and trying to sell it as Fine Literature.

but I should add that I really did enjoy all of the parts of "Life on the River" and Twain's criticisms of JF Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales (the Last of the Mohicans series). So there is value in Twain, for me, just not in Huck Finn.

You're a scoundrel not a teacher and if you know literature, I don't wear a moustache!

Strange, I remember loving it, but I don't remember reading it :).

I don't think you need to sell it as fine literature to the kids if you don't believe it yourself. Maybe you could ask them why THEY think its fine literature instead and see what they come up with.

Maybe they'll agree with you.
