9. Forever by Judy Blume

It really felt like it was going to be forever until I finished this book. Because I'm not a 13-14 year old suburban girl each page, each paragraph, each sentence was pure torture.

This book details the senior year of Katherine, who is contemplating losing her virginity to an extremely patient Michael.

There are the two friends who serve to act as Scylla and Charybdis (I've never been able to use this simile! Thanks Judy Blume!) Sybil the slut and Erica the girl who just wants to get it over with before she gets to college (how many high school boys scoop up some booty just this way?). Katherine wants to find the right guy. Sigh.

He patiently waits. They make out a lot. He patiently waits. They undress each other, but nothing happens. He patiently waits. They give each other hand jobs (described from Katherine's point of view it's quite a dull, dare I say, dry (nay!) experience). He patiently waits. FINALLY! she gives it up. Are you still awake, dear reader?

Sybil gets pregnant (has the baby "for the experience" and then gives it up for adoption). Erica is still waiting (she was dating the male lead in the school play and guess what!? He's geh!).

So then (you're still reading this? why?), Michael gets a summer job far away and so does Katherine. And she gets feelings for Theo, the tennis instructor. Buh-bye Michael. Thanks for the memories.

And get that cover! Thank Jeebus I didn't have to read this book on the subway.

Why in hell are you reading Forever? Judy Blume played a huge role in my pre-adolescent life. I read all her books and Forever was the forbidden one (except for the truly forbidden on Wifey) that we snuck and read at night. It was the first written sex scene I ever laid my eyes on, led me right to a steady diet of Penthouse Forum and digest-sized Variations (was that the name?) in later years.

I had to read it for my Young Adult Lit class.

I don't think I even knew Judy Blume existed until college. I'm not even kidding. I had two brothers and was immersed in the D&D/fantasy books.

And before that it was Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown and Choose-Your-Own-Adventure.

There's a very hot scene in, I think, Super Fudge, where the protagonist goes to the movies with a girl for the first time and their hands keep touching in the popcorn. Buttery!

I've always been a great fan of Judy Blume. I'm 17 years old and I just read Forever. I had no clue what it was about. I just picked it up because the cover was cute and it reminded me of a picture I took with an ex-boyfriend. I read the story in one day! I couldn't put it down. I guess that my age makes me veiw the story differently than you. But, I'm so happy I read it. Actually, I wouldn't mind reading it over and over. I'm sure as I get older, the story will get old and I won't be interested anymore. But, I can wait for that time to come. I don't think it'll be any time soon.
